English Language Learners  face a dual challenge: acquire English-language proficiency and academic content knowledge. My Reading Mentor addresses these challenges. Our  research-based virtual programs are designed to enhance reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. Grammar and vocabulary support are organized in content area topics at varying grade ranges and language proficiency levels.

Discover the many genres of books we make available to our students

What is genre? A genre is a form of text that uses a particular format and structure (Duke & Purcell-Gates, 2003). From the primary grades, students need to know that there are different kinds of texts, each with its own features, purposes, and conventions. Even very young students can learn that narrative text tells a story, persuasive text is written to persuade a reader, and informational text is written to give the reader facts. Using the word “genre” gives students a way to organize and talk about their observations. My Reading Mentor’s  virtual  programs takes readers many places and help students learn new things about the world they live in

  • "The passion Miss Joy has for teaching and making learning fun is impressive and comforting. When your girls look forward to going to class and ask for more time learning you know you’re on the right track. Our girls are enjoying themselves, and we are happy seeing results in short time frames."

¡¡¡Gracias, Miss Joy!!! My daughter definitely has improved her English comprehension with the Virtual Book Room Raz Kids Program. After a few months with the Reading program, she understands better what she hears and what she reads, as well; and her pronunciation is better now. She has also got better grades in her English class. At the present, she doesn’t realize when a TV program is in English because she understands more. Thank you, Miss Joy!!!"

Gracias."

  • “Joy is a godsend, she has taught both of my kids to read and she recommended we have my son tested and we found out he has mild dyslexia. Joy develops customized and comprehensive programs per the child’s needs. She uses a variety of programs to address different areas of reading. She is highly skilled and a rare find with all her knowledge and experience. My kids love working with Ms. Joy and she will forever be their favorite teacher.”

  • “Miss Joy started out helping our oldest son with reading when what he was getting at school just wasn’t enough (a common issue for foreigners here in Mexico). We had tried several other local tutors, but it largely just caused him more confusion, they simply didn’t have the skills or training of a true reading specialist. She did such a wonderful job with him so quickly, that our younger son asked to see Joy as well! She has now been working with both of them for several months and they are both learning so much faster, much less painfully and are proud of what they can do. Not only has she helped them read, she has really boosted their self-confidence. It has gone from a struggle to something they find truly interesting. We have plans to do extensive traveling and she has even been able to work with our difficult schedule and set up a blended learning program to continue their work when we can’t meet in person. I feel so much better about our children’s education knowing we have Miss Joy on our team!“

  • " I would like to share my experience with Raz, I decided to join the program with my 11 year old daughter, because I am a strong believer to educate with an example. We had been joining reading the different books, we read together sometimes, we comment about the books and we even talk about making things we learned on the books, like making a bat house or a totem, for the house. And while doing all of these we are also both improving our English!! Double bonus!!!" We are very happy with the program!!

  • "Joy has been, without a doubt, the most valuable resource in my daughter’s educational journey over the past 5 years. She is amazing! My daughter loves working with her and still looks forward to their sessions together. They meet via Skype twice weekly, and Joy’s innumerable resources along with her commitment and enthusiasm have kept the classes engaging and relevant as my daughter’s skills have improved. When Suni began working with Joy in Mexico, she was in 3rd grade and couldn’t read. We struggled with finding the right support and interventions for her and meeting Joy when we did was a godsend. Suni is now in junior high school, taking honors classes in Colorado and has received numerous awards for outstanding effort and growth. Joy has been her champion and mentor the entire time. Her dedication to her students is inspiring and her wealth of knowledge is a true benefit to anyone fortunate enough to get to work with her".

  • "With Miss Joy, I learn how to pronounce better of course with Raz. I record all my readings also it helps me learn things of life and all the books are very interesting to me. I want everybody to study English with this program"

    Jazmin WangJazmin, 4th grade student
  • "This school year I changed schools and started to have classes with with Miss Joy, and she invited me to become a RAZ-kid. I am very happy about it, because it teaches you a lot of new words and it inspires me to get to know more stories. In every story you learn at least ten new words and you learn something new from each of the stories too. I think my favourite one is about Obama, or maybe the one about Egypt. Or would it be the story about Independence Day? So much to choose from"!

Liza Duran4th grade student, Playa del Carmen, Mexico
  • " This school year my daughter became part of RAZ. As a parent this is such a rewarding program. Yes, you have to invest some time to be there for your child, but the rewards are so much greater: you get to see your child growing into a much more secure reader while learning words, interesting facts and sweet little stories. And under your eyes you see them growing into their role of story teller, mastering the texts and being able to listen to their own voice in a way they haven't done before. General knowledge (about animals, insects, presidents, science) grows, and their love for reading too. What an excellent way to get your child interested in literature"!
