How Does Reading Assistant Work?

How Reading Assistan Works

Every parent and educator knows that students benefit from extra reading practice, especially when it is combined with immediate feedback and support from a teacher. Reading Assistant is that teacher!

Reading Assistant Step By Step

Students listen to a model fluent reading phto raof the passage, preview vocabulary, and then record themselves reading the passage out loud.

After reading, students review problematic words they did not understand, and playback their reading. The student then reads out loud a second time, and a third time if the reading fluency goal is not met.

Each Reading Assistant passage ends with a quiz to assess.

Real-time Literacy Support

Reading Assistant is the ONLY online academic software program that “listens” to students as they read out loud, monitoring for signs of difficulty.  Students re-read passages several times to improve their reading proficiency. No other program or e-book provides comparable read-time guidance and feedback.

TEACHING VOCABULARY & ORAL LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT IS  IMPORTANT FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS.

Vocabulary development comes first because without knowledge of some words in English, ELL students will have no basis for understanding at all. Vocabulary enriches children’s language and helps them to develop comprehension through concept development and word usage.

Vocabulary’s link to comprehension has been extensively researched and the importance of directly teaching vocabulary has been firmly established in helping students understand words, phrases and their relationships as well as on acquiring new vocabulary.  Reading Assistant takes English Language learners further academically by providing:

  1. a description, explanation or example of the new word
  2.  an image or picture representation of the word
  3. ‘Think About It’ questions to  help understand new vocabulary words
  4.  comprehension quizzes that allow students to review new words and their associated meanings or multiple meanings

Students need to do particularly well in two areas to improve their reading: Words Correct Per Minute(WCPM) and Quiz. Reports reflect progress on the two skills using three different performance levels:

Proficient, Developing or Emerging

SCORES

Ideally students would be working in the proficient and developing level.
