The 21st century classroom is no longer just a physical classroom. With online learning, a classroom can also be a fully virtual learning environment (VLE) including teaching and learning tools facilitated by computers and the internet and designed to enhance a student’s learning experience. In general, VLE users are assigned either a teacher ID or a student ID. The teacher sees what a student sees, but the teacher has additional user rights to create or modify curriculum content and track student performance. Virtual learning options mean more opportunities for students and teachers to find literacy success on their own schedules.

One of the great struggles of education is providing all children the individualized instruction they need to understand the material taught and to be challenged at their level, especially when teaching children to read and improve their reading skills.

Virtual learning can deliver an effective solution and ICT educational benefits to personalizing literacy instruction for children. Technology can adapt effective teaching models, content, and assessment to individual students. Individualized instruction is important to a child’s progress and improvement in reading.

Personalized learning must be:

Engaging for students to hold their interest and motivate them to continue

Based on research to provide effective curriculum and instruction

Broad and deep to provide the content needed for true individualization

A safe, nonjudgmental environment where students can develop positive experiences with language and reading.

WHAT DO WE TEACH?

Reading is a complex process requiring mastery of five foundational reading skills, which together, allow us to read confidently. The five foundation skills for learning to read are: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We use a wide range of materials to teach students how to read. Our multi-sensory instructional approach is flexible enough to serve a range of learners. All programs are designed to help students master key literacy skills. We incorporate all kinds of purposeful reading to build reading stamina, support independent learning and reading for pleasure.

We use technology to meet students’ diverse learning needs. With research-based software programs, we can create engaging and fun student-driven learning experiences. Students receive individualized reading instruction with effective practice time at their own pace and developmental level. My Reading Mentor tracks learning results to ensure program success and learning satisfaction.

With the right technology, struggling readers and English Language Learners can gain not only more practice and language experiences per unit of time than they can from traditional instruction; they can also gain the right word and language experiences to prevent them from falling behind, giving them a chance at excelling and achieving their potential.

OUR PROGRAMS We provide interactive and engaging literacy programs to meet the various instructional needs and reading levels of our students. Our goal is to improve kids’ reading skills. We strive to help our students become independent, thoughtful and purposeful readers. Emphasis is placed on systematic, direct instruction of concepts and skills supported and enhanced by all learning modalities: visual, kinesthetic, auditory and tactile strategies (VAKT).

Our virtual online reading programs provide guided oral reading instruction, combined with professional oversight anytime, anywhere. We make sure to be in regular contact with our students and parents . We provide frequent email reporting, monthly comprehension skills reports, personalized short audio messages and online recognition certificates for student motivation.

Reading Medallions are awarded upon successful completion of our virtual reading programs.

English Reading programs are customized primarily for children in grades (K-6); however, we do provide programs for English Language Learners of all ages. We develop an instructional learning plan for diverse language learners which includes an appropriate reading program and learning approach based on the results of: specific diagnostic and formative assessments,review of lexile scores, study habits, family goals and reading course(s) in school. Parents can schedule an appointment to discuss customized learning plans. The Reading Cafe Menu , incorporates reading strategies that help our diverse language learners become better readers. We use the Reading Readiness Assessment (RRA) as our general screening tool designed to identify students who may be at risk for reading problems and to measure language and literacy progress in English. The test is designed to be used for K/1 students but is also used for English language learners in higher grades. RRA – Based on Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta .

Maria Jose loves to read! She has made great progress after a few months of reading practice in the Virtual Book Room. Listen to her read a story in October and again a few months later. We think Maria Jose should become a storyteller one day.

One of the most important ways students expand their vocabulary skills and become familiar with the basic structures of English grammar is through reading. Exposing students to reading early and often helps them develop the *Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP)* they need in subject area classes. Motivation for reading increases when students read with a purpose.

English and Spanish Diagnostic Reading Assessments

DORA is a comprehensive, valid, and reliable web-based assessment tool that diagnostically assesses students’ reading abilities. DORA adapts to students as they respond to each question in the online program, getting harder or easier as needed to complete the diagnosis. DORA’s interactive style makes testing fun and it engages students.

By examining multiple reading measures together, DORA reveals a student’s unique reading profile and offers a comprehensive report for parents and teachers in both English and Spanish.

Reports may be used to both guide classroom instruction and prescribe activities for home instruction. Miss Joy administers the DORA English/Spanish assessments on a case by case basis.

ETS®: TOEFL ® Junior™ Test announced that young English language learners who take the new TOEFL Junior test ( ages 11+) will also receive a Lexile measure. My Reading Mentor reading resources will match students with a variety of text by Lexile scores. Our ” Good Fit” eBooks offer English Language Learners personalized language and literacy support.
