Family literacy is a compilation of beliefs, practices, and traditions that families use to stimulate literacy development for all family members. The literacy process begins with the youngest children in oral language development. For young children, family literacy activities include: singing songs, reciting nursery rhymes, telling stories, reading books, identifying objects, learning new vocabulary, playing word games, drawing pictures, dramatic play and dramatizing stories. As children get older, activities may include family reading time, reading aloud fiction and non-fictional books, listening to audio-books together, writing in journals, writing shopping or to-do lists, and encouraging children to tell their own stories and to record these stories.
Important elements of language are: Phonology, Vocabulary, Morphology , Syntax and Pragmatics (communication).

La alfabetización familiar es una suma de creencias, prácticas y tradiciones familiares usadas que con el fin de estimular el desarrollo de la alfabetización para todos los miembros de la familia. El proceso de alfabetización comienza con los más pequeños en el desarrollo del lenguaje oral. Para los pequeños, las actividades de alfabetización familiar incluyen cantar , recitar poemas de niños, contar historias, leer libros, identificar objetos y aprender nuevas palabras, jugar juegos de palabras, dibujar y representar las historias que conocen. Cuando los chicos van creciendo, las actividades pueden incluir un momento familiar de lectura, leer en voz alta , escuchar cuentos juntos, escribir en los diarios, escribir las listas de compras o las cosas que tenemos que hacer, incentivar que los niños cuenten sus propias historias y escribir éstas, conversar sobre una película o una serie de televisión, sobre los personajes, el lugar donde se desarrolla la historia, la trama- También se puede investigar sobre los temas de interés .

Children learn to read by engaging in the act of reading by “Reading the Pictures”, “Reading the Words” and also “Retelling a Familiar Story”. With this in mind, parents can model the “3 Ways to Read” below using a short picture book.
Story telling about the pictures in the book. Explain the pictures in each page. For example: “ Here is the first page, I see five people and white houses in the background…”
Read the same book again , but this time read the words.
Retell the story by looking at the pictures and stating what is happening in each page.
Reminding older students to read pictures is a critical strategy, especially if they are reading nonfiction, graphic novels, and some textbooks.
